Isolated Neutron Stars: Accretors and Coolers
نویسندگان
چکیده
As many as 109 neutron stars populate the Galaxy, but only ≈ 103 are directly observed as pulsars or as accreting sources in X–ray binaries. In principle also the accretion of the interstellar medium may make isolated neutron stars shine, and their weak luminosity could be detected in soft X–rays. Recent ROSAT observations have convincingly shown that neutron stars accreting from the interstellar medium are extremely rare, if observed at all, in contrast with earlier theoretical predictions. Until now two possible explanations for their elusiveness have been proposed: their velocity distribution may peak at ∼ 200 − 400 km s, as inferred from pulsar statistics, and this would severely choke accretion; the magnetic field may decay on timescales ∼ 108 − 109 yr, preventing a large fraction of neutron stars from entering the accretor stage. The search for accreting neutron stars has produced up to now a handful of promising candidates. While little doubt is left that these objects are indeed isolated neutron stars, the nature of their emission is still controversial. In particular accreting objects can be confused with much younger, cooling neutron stars. However, a combination of observations and theoretical modeling may help in discriminating between the two classes. Subject headings: Stars: Neutron — Stars: X–rays — Stars: Dynamics

Log N – Log S Distributions of Accreting and Cooling Isolated Neutron Stars
We model populations of isolated neutron stars in the Galaxy following their orbital and magneto-rotational evolution. It is shown that accretors become more abundant than coolers at fluxes below ∼ 10 −13 erg cm −2 s −1 , and one can predict that about one accreting neutron star per square degree should be observed at the Chandra and Newton flux limits of ∼ 10 −16 erg cm −2 s −1. The soft ROSAT...

We model Galactic populations of accreting and cooling isolated neutron stars in the attempt to explore their link with a new class of dim soft X-ray sources revealed by ROSAT. For accretors we follow the magnetorotational and dynamical evolution in the Galactic potential and a realistic large scale distribution of the interstellar medium is used. Under standard assumptions old neutron stars en...

With a simple model from the point of view of population synthesis we try to verify an interesting suggestion made by Pfahl & Rappaport (2001) that dim sources in globular clusters (GCs) can be isolated accreting neutron stars (NSs). Simple estimates show, that we can expect about 0.5-1 accreting isolated NS per typical GC with M = 10M⊙ in correspondence with observations. Properties of old acc...
متن کاملIsolated thermal neutron stars, soft gamma-ray repeaters and anomalous X-ray pulsars: propellers and early accretors with conventional magnetic fields?
The similarity of rotation periods from three interesting classes of neutron stars, the anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs), the soft gamma ray repeaters (SGRs) and the dim isolated thermal neutron stars (DTNs) suggests a common mechanism with an asymptotic spindown phase, extending through the propeller and early accretion stages. The DTNs are interpreted as sources in the propeller stage. Their lo...
متن کاملMagnetically Accreting Isolated Old Neutron Stars
Previous work on the emission from isolated old neutron stars (IONSs) accreting from the interstellar medium (ISM) has focused on gravitational captureÈi.e., Bondi accretion. We propose a new class of sources that accrete via magnetic interaction with the ISM. While for the Bondi mechanism the accretion rate decreases with increasing neutron star velocity, in magnetic accretors (MAGACs) M0 Bond...
